Reverse Osmosis System – Improving Your Water Quality

What is a reverse osmosis system?  The ROS screens out materials down to the ion which means they block bacteria, viruses and even salt particles in your drinking water.  These systems are called reverse osmosis because the filter allows only water molecules through.

Other water filters screen out materials down to the micron-level (dust, dirt and particles barely visible to the naked eye).

You can put an under-sink reverse osmosis filter to treat your kitchen sink water for around $450 plus labor which will eliminate the need for bottled water which can save you $281 a year and also eliminate the plastic bottles in your recycling bin.

Now there are whole house models that range from $5000 to $10000 installed.

Before you purchase a whole house system experts recommend that you have your water tested by a certified water treatment professional.  There are tests kits out there and professionals recommend you choose one that requires sending a sample back to a certified labs.  Beware of colored test strips.  Websites to check out: www.H20test.com , www.Etrlabs.com, www.Discovertesting.com  If you choose to use your own lab give the test results to a professional so they can do an assessment of your home’s need.

What does it filter? : germs; everything from cold germs to E. Coli.

If your water has an odd taste or smell you may be picking up heavy metals from corroded pipes or oil runoff from a buried fuel tank or nearby gas station.

The average family of four uses about 400 gallons of water daily and if your plumbing lacks enough pressure to force the water through the tight screening of these fine filters the water will flow at only a 1/3 of the rate.  An additional pump may be needed.

Maintenance is the key to make sure your water is clean and flowing.  It is recommended that pre-filters be replaced ever 6 months and the heavy-duty membranes should be replaced every 4 to 6 years.
